Railway Conclave 2.0: Govt has no business to be in business — Possibilities and Quagmire of Privatisation in Railways
Chintan Research Foundation (CRF) presents Railway Conclave 2.0: “Govt has no business to be in business — Possibilities and Quagmire of Privatisation in Railways.” Bringing together policymakers, railway leaders, CPSUs, private operators, and researchers, the Conclave examines how calibrated privatisation and corporatisation can strengthen financial sustainability while preserving railways’ public-service mandate. Discussions will cover freight–passenger cross-subsidy, PPPs, station redevelopment, land monetisation, production unit reforms, and commodity-specific logistics corridors, with lessons from Japan, the UK, and China. Two focused sessions—“Views from Within” and “Stakeholders’ Perspectives”—will surface practical models, regulatory safeguards, and roadmap actions to build a future-ready, citizen-centric Indian Railways that powers growth, competitiveness, and inclusive connectivity.
