Armed conflicts worldwide—from Ukraine and Gaza to Yemen and Afghanistan—bring immense human suffering while simultaneously causing severe, yet often overlooked, environmental destruction. Warfare destroys ecosystems, contaminates water and soil, disrupts agriculture, and weakens waste management systems, worsening climate vulnerability in already ecologically fragile regions. Military activities such as aerial bombardments, heavy machinery use, chemical munitions, and burn pits leave long-lasting toxic residues, while landmines and unexploded ordnance render vast areas uninhabitable and ecologically degraded. The collapse of environmental infrastructure fuels a cycle of food insecurity, water scarcity, and unsustainable livelihoods, with impacts that persist long after conflicts end. Despite the scale of destruction, global recognition and accountability remain limited. This discussion seeks to assess the environmental consequences of war, link conflict to climate vulnerability, integrate ecological protection into security and reconstruction strategies, and advocate for international responsibility. Sustainable peace requires not just rebuilding societies but restoring the ecosystems that sustain them.
